BYU's Freshman QB: From Doubt to Belief - Brandon Doman's Story (2025)

Uncommon Talent: Brandon Doman's Evolution in BYU's QB Story

The world of sports is full of surprises, and sometimes, it takes a former player's perspective to truly appreciate a team's success. For Brandon Doman, a former BYU quarterback and coach, his journey from doubt to admiration is a testament to the talent of Bear Bachmeier, the Cougars' freshman quarterback.

Initially, Doman questioned Bachmeier's capabilities, but after witnessing his performance, he's now a firm believer in the young quarterback's potential. "For a freshman to do what he’s doing, I’ve seen enough football in my life to have doubts," Doman shared on the "Y’s Guys" livestream show. "But the coaching staff knew him, they recruited him, and they had the foresight to see his potential."

Doman's own experience as a quarterback at BYU (2000-01) and his subsequent coaching roles with John Beck and Max Hall, who collectively amassed over 11,000 passing yards, give him a unique insight into the game. He praises Bachmeier's grit, intellectual capacity, and mature performance, describing him as "uncommon."

Bachmeier's talent is further validated by the Big 12's recognition of his performance at Cincinnati, where he was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for the sixth time. Despite the quarterbacks' risky rushing statistics, Bachmeier's consistency and health have been remarkable, ensuring BYU's success in the Big 12.

The Cougars' defense, led by Jay Hill, has also been a key factor in their success. Ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 for scoring defense and total defense, and No. 1 in red-zone defense, the Cougars have 38 interceptions over the last two seasons, including 16 in 2025. This defensive prowess has significantly enhanced their recruitment efforts, improving their depth chart.

As BYU approaches Thanksgiving with a 10-1 record and a shot at the Big 12 championship, Doman believes they have a lot to prove. "A win over the Knights will clinch a spot in the championship game," he said. "But no one believes in them. It's a chance for them to show their true potential."

Doman's own experience with being discredited adds a layer of poignancy to his words. In 2001, his 10th-ranked Cougars were snubbed by the Bowl Championship Series, highlighting the ongoing struggle for national recognition. Despite this, Doman remains optimistic, urging the team to play with confidence and determination.

In a sport where talent and hard work often go hand in hand, Doman's journey from doubt to admiration showcases the power of belief and the potential for growth. As the Cougars continue their journey, they have the opportunity to prove themselves and earn the respect they deserve.
