Rafizi's Call for Justice: Anwar and Shamsul's Legal Battle Against Businessman Albert Tei (2025)

Scandal, accusations, and a call for legal action — Malaysia’s political stage just got a lot messier. Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has called on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former aide Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin to take businessman Albert Tei to court over serious and unverified claims.

Rafizi stressed that the accusations — including claims that Shamsul accepted funds from Tei and the circulation of a video hinting at Anwar’s involvement in a Sabah-related controversy — are yet to be substantiated. According to Rafizi, the only proper place to test these claims is in a court of law.

He pointed out that the burden of proof rests squarely on Albert Tei’s shoulders. “Unless Tei can present irrefutable evidence, such as a direct recording of a meeting where the Prime Minister gives such instructions, his allegations are built on speculation rather than fact,” Rafizi said, emphasizing that without such proof, the matter should proceed through judicial channels.

But here's where it gets even more dramatic — a covertly recorded video has surfaced, allegedly showing Tei conversing with a woman believed to be acting on behalf of Shamsul. In the video, the woman purportedly claims that Anwar had personally approved Shamsul’s decision to let Tei secretly record Sabah politicians. These alleged recordings, she claimed, captured conversations involving bribes linked to mining license deals.

The controversy deepened further when the video appeared shortly after Tei made another public statement. He alleged that he had spent RM629,000 on Shamsul’s behalf to help recover money that was supposedly diverted to politicians in Sabah. To back his story, Tei even shared several WhatsApp screenshots from December 2023 with an online news portal, which he claimed showed Shamsul requesting funds while he was abroad.

Following these explosive revelations, Shamsul has since stepped down from his role as Anwar’s political secretary.

But here’s the real question: Are these shocking accusations part of a genuine whistleblowing effort, or a politically timed move to damage reputations? Should public figures immediately resort to legal action to defend their names — or would doing so only fan the flames of controversy? What do you think — is taking this fight to court the best way to uncover the truth, or will it only deepen the political divide?
